The High-Integrity Blue Carbon Market Technical Workshop was held from 11th to the 14th of June 2024 in Jakarta and brought together experts, stakeholders, and community representatives to develop strategies for advancing high-integrity blue carbon projects within Indonesia.
The workshop aimed to support the Indonesian government in strengthening its understanding of integrity and the blue carbon market, particularly within the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) and other relevant ministries and stakeholders. It sought to advance efforts related to Indonesia’s seagrass carbon market projects, particularly in the context of supporting Marine Protected Areas and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) reporting.
Throughout the event, participants from MMAF and other ministries were brought up to date on the latest developments in blue carbon markets, covering topics such as opportunities, risks, governance approaches, community-focused projects, and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV). The workshop also helped identify data and information gaps that need to be addressed to inform future decision-making on a potential Indonesian blue carbon market model. This mapping exercise helped form the foundation for potential future technical consultations.
As a result of the workshop, participants gained a deeper understanding of blue carbon market opportunities and risks, national governance options, and the MRV of seagrass carbon.
